Teaching American History Grants

The Ashbrook Center has partnered with various local school districts and local education agencies to receive grants from the U.S. Department of Education's Teaching American History Grant Program. Among other activities, these grants allow teachers from these districts to participate in Master's courses at no charge. The grants also cover the cost of books and offer a $500 stipend for each course taken. Teachers participating in the grant program are audit students in the course, and they may choose to take the course for credit at a discounted tuition rate of $440 for the two credit hour credits. Each year, there are openings not used by these school districts that are made available to other teachers across the country. You can apply on-line for these free summer courses. While teachers from the school districts we partner with may attend more than one course, those from other schools can attend only one of the free summer courses each year.

Graduate Loans

Ashland University participates in the Federal Stafford Loan Program. This program is available for all eligible students enrolled in the MAHG Program. In addition, there are also private education loan programs available for MAHG students.

Loans for MAHG students are processed through the Ashland University Financial Aid Office once students have been accepted into the MAHG Program. However, prospective students may begin the loan application process prior to acceptance to ensure that all forms have been received by the Financial Aid Office and are ready to be processed as soon as student are accepted into the program.

Complete student loan information is found on the AU Financial Aid website. Click on Graduate Students in the First Steps box for application instructions, forms needed, student loan limits and terms. Click on Graduate Students in the Next Steps box to learn about loan processes needed to ensure your loan will guarantee and credit to your account.

Federal Stafford Loans

According to federal regulations, Federal Stafford Loans are restricted to students enrolled at least half-time (3 credit hours) in a degree-granting program. To receive a federal loan for the summer, you must be accepted into the Master of American History and Government (MAHG) degree program and you must enroll for at least two courses (since each session is 2 credit hours) to be considered a half-time student.

All MAHG students applying for a Federal Stafford Loan must complete the following each year:

Incoming MAHG students must complete additional processes in order for their Stafford Loans to guarantee. For details go to the AU Financial Aid website, click on Graduate Students in the Next Steps box and then click on the Loan Processes box.

Note about Loan Deferment: Payments on Federal Stafford Loans may be deferred as long as a student remains enrolled at least half-time each semester. However, because the MAHG program only offers courses during the summer, it is not possible to defer a Federal Stafford Loan if you are only taking courses in the MAHG program. To defer your loan, you would have to be enrolled at least part-time in another program or at another university during the fall and spring semesters.

Private Education Loans

Students who plan to enroll as non-degree students or students who do not plan to enroll in more than one course during the summer may apply for a private education loan. Students applying for a private education loan must complete Ashland University Summer Loan Application in order for the AU Financial Aid Office to certify the private loan. After completing the Summer Loan Application, students should then apply for the private education loan directly to the lender. The AU Financial Aid Office lists several private education lenders on its website. Simply click on Graduate Students in the First Steps box and then click on Student Loans.
