General Info for Teaching American History Grant Students

Welcome to the graduate courses in American History and Government at the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University! The purpose of this page is to provide information to assist you in preparing for the course(s) you have registered to take this summer.

Syllabus, Course Packets and Books:
Required textbooks will be shipped to you from the Ashland University Bookstore. If you do not receive your reading materials by May 31st, please contact us at mahg@ashland.edu.

It is your responsibility to bring the printed course packet(s) with you for your course(s).

Please review the Academic Integrity information at the bottom of the Course Packet page.

Graduate Credit:
For those taking the institute for the two graduate credits, you may register on-line.

The cost of the two graduate credits is $440 ($220/credit hour), which is a discounted rate from the typical $468/credit hour for the Master's credit. Payment can be made on-line with a check or credit card. Payment must be made no later than the Monday of your course.

Everyone is expected to complete the reading assignments and fully participate in the discussions during the week. The written requirements in the syllabus must be completed only by those students taking the institute for graduate credit.

As a participant of the Teaching American History grant program, you will be asked to take a Pre- and Post-Assessment "test." These anonymous tests will be used to evaluate the grant program and are not a part of your grade.

Stipend:
You will receive the $500 stipend at the conclusion of the institute during check-out. The $100 deposits paid will be refunded to you at that time also.

Travel:
The closest airports are Cleveland, Columbus, and Akron-Canton. Each is about an hour from campus.

Shuttle service from the Cleveland airport and back will be available at no cost to you. If you are interested in this service, please contact us at mahg@ashland.edu with the following information as soon as your travel plans are finalized:

  • Departure City-Airline Name and Flight Number-Arrival Date and Time in Cleveland;
  • Departure Date and Time from Cleveland-Airline Name and Flight Number-Arrival City;
  • A contact phone number (preferably cell).

A shuttle schedule will be established based on the arrival information provided to us, and will be sent to you via email prior to your travel.

Otherwise, the best way to get from the airport to campus is with a rental car. Driving directions can be found on the reverse side of the campus map.
