General Info for Masters Course Students

Welcome to the graduate courses in American History and Government at the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University! The purpose of this e-mail is to provide information to assist you in preparing for the course(s) you have registered to take this summer.

Course Packets and Books:
If you would like to order your books from the Ashland University bookstore, you may call 419/289-5318. You may also order your books online through the Ashland University bookstore at: www.ashlandbookstore.com. If you would like to purchase the books elsewhere, the syllabus contains the ISBN numbers for the course books. It is your responsibility to bring the printed course packet(s) with you for your course(s).

Travel:
The closest airports are Cleveland, Columbus, and Akron-Canton. Each is about an hour from campus.

Shuttle service from the Cleveland airport and back will be available at no cost to you. If you are interested in this service, please contact us at mahg@ashland.edu with the following information as soon as your travel plans are finalized:

  • Departure City-Airline Name and Flight Number-Arrival Date and Time in Cleveland;
  • Departure Date and Time from Cleveland-Airline Name and Flight Number-Arrival City;
  • A contact phone number (preferably cell).

A shuttle schedule will be established based on the arrival information provided to us, and will be sent to you via email prior to your travel.

Otherwise, the best way to get from the airport to campus is with a rental car. Driving directions can be found on the reverse side of the campus map.

Check-In and Check-Out:
General Check-in will take place on Sunday from Noon to 4:00 pm in the lobby of the middle apartment building (#7 on the online campus map). All participants must come to check-in, even if you intend to stay off campus.

If you cannot check-in or check-out during the designated times, you must contact us in advance at mahg@ashland.edu.

Sunday's schedule is as follows:

12:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Check-In (middle Sr. Apartment Building B)
4:30 pm to 6:00 pm – Session One
6:30 pm to 7:30 pm – Dinner (Dining Hall - Upper Level - John C. Myers Convocation Center)
7:30 pm to 9:00 pm – Session Two - Institute Lecture (attendance is mandatory)

Computers:
A computer lab is available for you 24 hours a day (beginning Monday of each course) in 200 Patterson Hall. Access is granted with student ID cards. Computers are also available throughout the library. The computers have access to the Internet, Microsoft Office, and are connected to printers.

Housing Information:
You will be housed in apartments on the Ashland University campus. The apartments are two-bedroom suites with two people in each bedroom, and there is a living room and a full kitchen for every four people. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, and you will share a room with one other participant.

If you intend to arrive before Sunday or leave after Friday, you must contact us at mahg@ashland.edu in order to reserve a room.

Students taking courses for two consecutive weeks or more are welcome to stay on campus for the Friday and Saturday night between classes. There is no cost for the weekend stay; please advise us at check-in on Sunday if you will be staying the following weekend. A boxed lunch will be provided during checkout on Friday. Between classes, you will be responsible for dinner on Friday, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Fast-food restaurants and a coffee shop are within walking distance of campus, as well as the Eagles Nest which is open Monday-Saturday.

Single Rooms are available ONLY upon request, and are on a first-come first-serve basis. Single housing is available in remodeled dorms on the Ashland University campus, shares a community bathroom and is not air-conditioned.
