MAHGnum Opus: The Newsletter of the MAHG Program at Ashland University

Newly Published by Our Faculty
Fall 2008

Thomas Krannawitters Vindicating Lincoln: Defending the Politics of Our Greatest President (Rowman & Littlefield) appeared in August. Countering the arguments of those who attribute Lincolns decisions to expedience, Krannawitter explicates the principled statesmanship Lincoln showed during the nations greatest civil crisis. Krannawitter, who has taught the MAHG core course "Sectionalism and Civil War," is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Hillsdale College.

David Tuckers article, "Terrorism, Networks, and Strategy: Why the Conventional Wisdom is Wrong" has been published in Homeland Security Affairs (Volume IV No. 2: June 2008). Tucker, whose book Enlightened Republicanism: A Study of Jeffersons Notes on the State of Virginia appeared last spring, is Associate Professor of Defense Analysis at the United States Naval Postgraduate School and most recently taught the elective "Colonial Era" and the text course "Franklins Autobiography and Jeffersons Notes on the State of Virginia" in the MAHG program.

Anthony Peacocks study Deconstructing the Republic: Voting Rights, the Supreme Court, and the Founders' Republicanism Reconsidered was published this spring. The book argues that the Courts interpretation of the Voting Rights Act has transformed it "from a legal guarantee of protection from discrimination into a substantive equal-rights objective focusing on disadvantage and groups." Peacock, who taught with Jeffrey Sikkenga the elective "The Supreme Court" last summer, is Associate Professor of Public Law in the Political Science Department at Utah State University.
